Q: What is Podiatry?
As defined by the American Podiatric Medical Association
Podiatry is a field of medicine that strives to improve the overall health and well-being of patients by focusing on preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions associated with the foot and ankle. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are physicians and surgeons who practice on the lower extremities, primarily on feet and ankles. The preparatory education of most DPMs includes four years of undergraduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, followed by a hospital-based residency. DPMs are licensed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to diagnose and treat the foot and its related or governing structures by medical, surgical, or other means. The vast majority of states also include ankle care as part of the podiatric physician's scope of practice.

Arch Supports/Orthotics |
Q: What are Arch Supports?
Arch supports and shoe inserts are devices that are placed inside of shoes to support and align the foot and lower extremities (knees, hips, and lower back), thus preventing the progression of a foot deformity, improving the function of the foot, and diminishing or eliminating pain.
These devices can range from generic over-the-counter inserts to prescription devices custom made for the individual's foot and/or foot problem.

In our doctors' experience, Powersteps offer the best support and comfort when compared to other brands.

|
Q: Where can I get Prescription Custom Orthotics?
We recommend you see your local Podiatrist. A podiatrist is highly trained in prescribing custom orthotics, and is capable of making any adjustments that might need to be made. Check out our LINKS section on how to "Find a Podatrist".
|
Q: What is the difference between Prescription Custom Orthotics and Over-the-Counter Arch Supports?
Prescription custom orthotics are typically prescribed by a podiatrist. With custom orthotics, and acutal mold or cast is made of your foot imprint. An orthotic is then fabricated to custom fit your arch. These offer better support and typically last longer than over-the-counter supports. They are also usually thinner, and fit more comfortably within your shoe. They cost $300-$400. You should contact your local podiatrist for more information.
|
Q: What arch support (orthotic) can I use in women's dress shoes?
We suggest trying the Powerstep Slim-Tech. It is 3/4 length, so if fits much better into most shoes. We use this type of orthotic most commonly within our practice.
|
Q: Are more expensive Arch Supports better than the Powersteps we carry?
Powersteps offer the same support or better as any over-the-counter arch support(orthotic). The fact that they are inexpensive is a huge bonus to the consumer. Powersteps are designed to be used for any activity including sports. Be aware of any over-the-counter arch support that costs more than $35.
|
Q: How do I know if I need Arch Supports?
If you are having any type of foot pain, arch supports may be beneficial. They also can help relieve knee and back pain. We recommend you see your local podatrist for diagnosis and treatment of any foot related health problems.
